18 Mar Maryland: Urge Your Elected Officials to Support Premium Cigar Tax Reduction
House Bill 139 and Senate Bill 320 would reduce Maryland’s premium cigar tax from 15 percent to 7.5 percent. The bills are currently stalled in the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Committee on Budget and Taxation. With Monday’s cross-over deadline looming, it is critical that you call your elected officials today and express support for these bills so they remain viable.
Below are a few talking points on HB 139 and SB 320 for your use when calling your elected officials:
- Current tax burden is higher than all neighboring states
- Helps small businesses in Maryland compete with neighboring states and internet sales
- Protects small business jobs
- Minimal fiscal impact to the state
