Senate Confirms Alex Azar as New Secretary of Health & Human Services

24 Jan Senate Confirms Alex Azar as New Secretary of Health & Human Services

Earlier today, the United States Senate confirmed Alex Azar as the next Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) by a vote of 55-43. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is an agency within HHS, making the confirmation of Mr. Azar a critical piece to the ongoing review of premium cigars and other tobacco products.  IPCPR congratulates Mr. Azar and looks forward to working with him as the next Secretary of HHS.

As the former President of Eli Lilly’s US operations and Deputy Secretary of HHS during the George W. Bush Administration, Mr. Azar has a long and distinguished career in both the public and private sectors of health policy. IPCPR is encouraged by Mr. Azar’s impressive background, in-depth understanding of public policy and support for free market principles.  Our association looks forward to a productive dialogue on FDA’s regulation of premium cigars and the Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) currently underway.
