Chicago, IL: City Council Passes Anti-Tobacco Ordinance

Today, the Chicago City Council voted 35 to 10 to adopt a local ordinance that increases taxes on a variety of tobacco products, and raises the age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21. The tax on large cigars will increase by $.20 per cigar. This is on top of a 36 percent state excise tax and a $.30 per cigar tax imposed by Cook County. The tax on pipe tobacco will increase to $.60 per ounce. The tax increases as well as the age to purchase increase take effect July 1, 2016.
